What are Chthonic Entities?

The word chthonic, from the Greek meaning “under the earth”, was traditionally used to describe the Underworld and the beings associated with it.

Within Veythariel Flame we use the term more broadly. The chthonic realms are not understood as literal subterranean places beneath the Earth, but as realms and beings associated with particular qualities of existence: depth, pressure, intensity, transformation and the hidden currents beneath ordinary life.

These chthonic spirits and deities were once respected as forces of nature and deep transformation.
Over time, however, their stories became distorted. Monotheistic religions twisted and inverted many of their roles into weapons of morality :

• The keepers of the threshold were turned into sadistic jailers, torturers or monsters dragging human souls into eternal captivity.
• The transformative fire and crushing weight of transformation was recast as eternal punishment.
• The deep, latent power and hidden wisdom guarded by these currents were re-labelled as inherently evil, deceptive and dangerous.
• The cosmic balance and freedom of will they enforce was rebranded as sin.

Later, many occult traditions tried to bind and control these spirits, and their strict hierarchical structures and complex rituals have created access barriers for ordinary practitioners.
More recently, pop culture has done further damage by casting many ancient, proud and powerful spirits into harmless caricatures for human entertainment.

Here at the Altar you will learn to engage with these entities as real sovereign beings in ways that protect your agency as the practitioner as much as theirs.

Core Practices

I offer several branching paths into chthonic spirit work, but all Crossing practice is rooted in three core practices that bring our Foundational Principles into the work:

1. Clarity

We break through the mystique and opaque practices of certain occult traditions. Here we do not wrap the myth in velvet and smoke. We strip away any theatre and return to direct encounter.

Chthonic entities are notoriously direct in both their communication and the way they operate. They deserve the same respect in return.

Clarity is foundational when working with these spirits – you must learn to name what you want without shame and what you are willing to risk without self-delusion.

2. Honesty

Chthonic spirits simply do not tolerate deception. When you work with chthonic spirits you must embrace total honesty.
Their energies reveal any lies you have told yourself, any illusions you are still holding on to.

When you enter into these direct encounters and relationships, you must be prepared to look into the Black Mirror and see your true self reflected back at you, stripped of all performance. That process can be terrifying and deeply confrontational. You will learn to navigate this as part of your own shadow work.

3. Courage

Courage on the Path of the Crossing takes many forms. The courage to face yourself honestly. The courage to encounter beings who are not gentle or easy to work with.
And most importantly the courage to know and hold your own boundaries.

Chthonic entities are not malicious, but their energies can be intense and uncompromising. They will push you out of your comfort zone.
Lucifer’s energy for example is one of pure forward momentum. When invoking him you must have the maturity to say when that energy gets too much, when you need a break. These entities trust you to know your own limits and communicate those honestly.

Courage means standing beside an ancient chthonic being as an equal partner, not a supplicant.
